<> Anticipation Reaction guide

Anticipation/Reaction guide is a great pre-reading strategy. It helps to get students to start thinking about what they are about to read. It is also is a great way to get rid of any misconceptions about the topic.

<> KWL

This is a good guided reading strategy. This KWL worksheet can be a great way to learn what students might already know and lets teachers know what students might be interested. If a teacher fills one out it can also help them to focus their lesson and give them direction on what they want to teach.

<> Cornell Notes

This is a Guided Reading Strategy. It works really well for taking notes. It also helps students with summarizing skills. If you look at the student template, students can make their own very easily. Basically the right hand column is for notes, the left hand column is for questions, and the bottom area is for summarizing. Students could use this for a lecture or for reading a chapter.

<> Questioning the Author

This is a critical Literacy skill. Basically you are asking students to look closer at what an author is saying and try to read in between the lines or try to figure out if his/her facts are correct. I chose to look at Gregory Akner's History of the Nation of Archers. This is a little ambitious so it would be good for honors students or if you did do it with lower level students it would be important to read it together in class. I edited out parts of it to make it smaller anybody could cut out more parts of it. If you want the whole document you can look for it on Dr. May's website from the link and click on his Mongol class then look at Lectures and readings. For lower some students it may be best just to do this with the textbook.

Double Entry Journal

This is a good writing to learn strategy. This is great for chapters in books. On the left hand side there can be main ideas, vocab, or whatever. Students then find the pg. numbers for that. On the right hand side they then connect it to their lives, something they have previously learned, or something going on today. Normally it would be used for something longer than the story shown here, but I am just trying to give you the main idea

Proof

This is a study skill. Basically you come up with a broad generalization. Which can be very difficult. Then support it. This one has to do with Nomadic civilizations, which I don't fee enough attention is given to. They have been instrumental in bringing down several major civilizations in the world. They are an important part of understanding the world before the industrial era

Venn Diagram

This is a great "Strategy that Works" from Marzano. You can create two or three large overlapping circles. Each circle has a topic. You right distinct characteristics of each topic in that topic's circle. Any similarities between topics you put where those circles overlap.

Book List

This is a book list that I created. Most of the books are geared towards World and American History. However many have themes that correspond to other subjects as well.
